all good things must come to an end

After being up in the piazza for nearly a month (it was only supposed to be up for the weekend of City in Bloom!) Thimbles and Soup and I took down our colourful yarn creation. It was sad to have to pull off the lovely vines that had grown through it - I took a few photos on my phone (sorry about the quality!) for posterity.

We have had so many amazing people give us compliments about "Bloom Where You Are Planted" - thank you all. A great surprise the evening we were at the piazza taking down our piece - something to counter our sadness at removing it - we met Petrafanella from Made on the Left!! Wow! What an honour! I have been a fan of the Made on the Left crew ever since I discovered their existence. They have their Christmas Markets coming up soon - I am looking forward to experiencing a fine array of local handmade delectables!

. . . . our yarn bloom is up! after a lengthy install process we have finally completed the largest crochet piece that we have ever done! Thimbles and Soup has been an amazing creative collaborator!! Thank you!!! xxxx

So, here are a whole lot of images, because I couldn't decide on just a few! Thankfully we were able to start the install process at the Propel Youth Arts WA office, just down the road - thank you Propel! The next morning we spent a good 4 hours getting our piece up onto the 8mx8m greenwall. The City of Perth have allowed us to keep our piece up for 2 weeks rather than take it down after the City in Bloom weekend - thanks City of Perth! They also got us onto local TV news, and set up a local street press interview. Overall, a really wonderful project for us.

Now on my mind . . . something exciting for the Beaufort Street Festival! Watch this space . . . .!

City in Bloom

City in Bloom is nearly upon us!

Thimbles and Soup and I have been very busy bees, crocheting our spectacular yarn installation for the Northbridge Piazza Green Wall!! Now to plan the logistics of installation . . .

There is also one more part of creation, the vines to spell out "bloom where you are planted", which will accompany the large flower - spread out on my lounge room floor, it takes up the whole room! It is so exciting to see our creation coming together!

I think there will weekend picnic-ing at the piazza, to enjoy our installation, and to check out the other artist's pieces. There is a downloadable podcast describing all of the works from 720 ABC Perth radio, which you can listen to while walking the City of Bloom tour!

Wow - third post for the day! I have been busy!

This morning I stopped at a park in Guildford, a lovely spot that I drive pas on the way to work sometimes. I had a piece of crochet in the car that I had done a while ago, but hadn't found the right place for it to 'tag'. Here, among the gum trees, with the kookaburras laughing away, I found the perfect sized post (celebrating the year of the Silver Gum). A beautiful way to start the day! :)

beaufort street festival

The Beaufort Street Festival is coming up - on the 27th of November. There is a secret (sssshhh!!) knit project being worked on behind the scenes, which will be installed along Beaufort Street in Highgate for the festival. I am really excited about this project, and am looking for some collaborators to assist in the knitting/crocheting/yarn-tagging of various places along the street. art in bloom update

So, the lovely Emi and I have been thinking, and creating proto-types, in search of the perfect crochet installation idea for the Green Wall in the Northbridge Piazza. And it has been harder than we thought! It is good to have a restriction to a floral inspired design, but we both were hoping to have a message or concept behind the piece. Also finding an idea that will be effective (given the huge space) as well as able to construct in the time we have (limited!) is proving quite tricky! I made a trial flower, which I am quite pleased with, but it is just too small, and took too long to make, to re-produce the 20 or more we would need to look effective on the wall. . . . back to the drawing board!!!

am i, like, a REAL artist now?!?!

Since my ANZAC day tag made it into the West, I have been approached by the City of Perth to contribute a piece to the Art in Bloom in the City event in September. Crazy exciting!! I am collaborating with a lovely friend, and crafter/crocheter extraordinaire. You can find her here. The spot where we will be installing our crochet creation in the Greenwall in the Northbridge Piazza. It is a huge, and I mean MASSIVE wall - about 8m x8m we estimate.

So, now is the hard bit - coming up with a concept and design!! Apart from having a floral theme, we have free reign. So many ideas!

I have also been trying something new (well, new to me, having been inspired by many other's creations) - the crochet covered stone. Not really happy with this one, but hey, it's only the first try!

The gumnut hat was a bit of a winner, and I now have a small family of them! It think some Wild Tea Cosies are next!
